A Great Day for America

November 5, 2008

Any reader of this blog will know that my politics, informed largely by the principles of Catholic social teaching, were not fully represented by the campaign of Barack Obama. But I do believe that Obama’s campaign and victory beautifully represents the best ideals of America, which I also embrace. I was impressed by how gracefully John McCain said this in his concession speech. I was deeply moved by Obama’s victory speech, how powerfully he gave voice to the long struggle in America to bring those ideals to life and his sober articulation of our hope before a very challenging future.

Today, it’s enough to fly the flag. Tomorrow, we get to work.

Incidentally… If you are looking for a Campaign 2012 presidential candidate — already declared — who represents the full spectrum of Catholic Social Teaching, that would be: me. I’m a Catholic Worker, believe strongly in “Preferential Option for the Poor,” have a platform that across the board matches up with a Consistent Life Ethic… And I have run in four successive election cycles, to date. What’s more, I’m planning on winning this next time.

Thanks Joe — would that I knew about your campaign in 08! You’ve certainly got the the right positions on the issues, and anybody whose campaign touring includes 3000 miles by bicycle will get my enthusiastic attention if not my vote. We’ll be sure to give you a look in 2012.
